The discovery of the Lord Buddha’s relics at Piprahva city Uttar Pradesh Republic of India.
The relics of the Lord Buddha in the city of Piprahwa. A total of 3 excavations were conducted.
1st and 2nd excavation
Mr. William Claxton Peppe, an Englishman, discovered the relics in 1898 at a large mound called Birder, at depths of 10 feet and 18 feet. More than 1,000
pieces of bones, beads, crystals, and precious stones were also found.

3rd excavation
Mr. K.M. Srivastava, an Indian archaeologist, discovered the relics in 1971, at depth of 19.7 feet. Two soapstone caskets were found, with the larger one containing 12 relics of Lord Buddha and the smaller one containing 10 relics. These caskets had the same appearance as those excavated by Mr. William Claxton Peppe. Currently, twenty relics are enshrined at the National Museum, New Delhi, and two at the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
Significant evidences revealing that these are the relics of the Lord Buddha are the caskets that were found with an inscription in the Brahmi script, which can be translated as “This casket containing the relics of the Lord Buddha belonged to the Sakya Rajasu Kiti and Phra Bhata, along with their consorts, sons and wives. Built and dedicated”
The discovered relics of the Lord Buddha were distributed by the British government, the ruler of India at that time, as follows:
- Temples in Sri Lanka and temples in India.
- Mr. William Pepe, who received 1 part of the tooth relic (tooth) and one of the six parts of the gemstones discovered.
- The Buddhist Association in London received 12 gemstones.
- His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V). Upon receiving, he graciously ordered it to be enshrined at Borom Banphot (Phu Khao Thong), Wat Saket, Bangkok. and some were given to temples in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Japan.
